“The ways of the soul”
The specialization of monastic spiritual theology of the Faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Ateneo Sant’Anselmo, promotes the Cultural Project POETRY AND SPIRITUALITY “The ways of the soul”. This is a project that aims to dialogue and interact with Literature, Spirituality and Philosophy by relating to other artistic languages: Music, Painting, Dramaturgy.
Its purpose is to embody … poetry as a precise and “strong” language. The inspiration draws its voice from the admirable poetry of S. HEDWIG (SILJA WALTER) OSB (1919-2011), a Benedictine nun in Fahr (Switzerland) who, astonishingly, translated the search for herself, her times, into poetry of colorful figurative spaces incarnated with passion, in the light and following of the One who, himself, defines the “Ocean of love”: Jesus.
On the other hand, we refer to the vast monastic literary tradition, beginning with lectio divina, the meditative and contemplative reading of the Bible that was very present in the Sayings of the Fathers of the Desert through the writings of St. Anselm and St. Bernard, who grew with profound existential and mystical experience, up to the studies of Jean Leclercq OSB, summarized in the book Love of Writing and the Desire for God, and the works of Thomas Merton. The horizon of knowledge also opens other voices, of other times and cultural, spiritual and linguistic Traditions: thus, going back to the roots of Poetry starting from the first Poet: Orpheus, and gradually moving throughout the Tradition and the “canon” of various cultures, languages, and eras.
